Surface Preparation: 1. Dampen a paper towel with rubbing alcohol. Wipe over entire metal surface with moistened paper towel to remove dirt and/or grease film. This will improve the adhesive properties of the enamel paints.
Painting Instructions:
1. Scrolls – Refer to Flower Petals Worksheet (1011AWKSHT) to practice strokework before painting. Double load the No. 12 Flat Brush with Lemon Custard and Yellow Ochre. Blend on the palette to soften the color.
2. Begin painting the scroll design with the center large comma stroke. On the chisel edge of the brush, touch the surface; apply pressure, pull and lift. If you would like the center stroke larger, reapply the stroke to the outside of the first stroke.
3. Continue adding comma strokes creating a pattern as shown in the photo.
4. Some strokes are highlighted and others are shaded. To highlight, load the No. 2 Script Liner Brush with Wicker White. Paint the highlight by re-stroking a section of the original comma stroke.
5. Continue using the No. 2 Script Liner Brush loaded with Burnt Umber to shade some strokes.
6. NOTE: Continue painting comma strokes creating scrollwork patterns around the vase. Accent the vase base with a pattern of scrolls as well.
Finishing Touches –
1. Don’t forget to sign your name in the color desired with thinned paint using the No. 2 Script Liner Brush. Enjoy!
2. To cure paint, follow either the Bake Method or the Air Dry Method:
Bake Method of Curing FolkArt Enamels:
Allow your piece to dry for one hour to be sure all layers of paint have dried. Place the piece in a cool oven. Set the oven temperature to 350ºF and bake project for 30 minutes. Glass must heat gradually with the oven to avoid breakage. Do not place glass in a hot oven. After 30 minutes, turn the oven off. Let glass cool completely in oven. Do not use for 72 hours.
Air Dry Method for Curing FolkArt Enamels:
Air dry the project for 21 days before using.
