Susan Kay Goans

Home Decorating

Susan Goans has made a fascinating career of her love of color and design.

In 1980 she invented a wall stenciling technique at a time when pre-cut stencils were not available. Since then, she has developed technical processes for marbleizing and other beautiful faux finishes. The tools she has produced and patented, such as Decorator Tools Faux Finish Mitts, sow her originality and interest in sharing her joy of painting with others.

This personal interest has generated a thriving business that includes custom work for clients, designs for stencil patterns, faux finish tools and techniques, and paint finish products. Susan has authored more than 40 books and regularly appears on home design programs.

Her work is sought after by the industry's top designers and is displayed in historic locations throughout the nation, including Atlanta's beautiful Peacock House (near the governor's mansion), homes in South Carolina's famous South Battery area and the renowned Mills Mansion Estate in New York's Hudson River Valley. She has traveled and worked throughout her career reaching as far east as Cumbria, England, where some of her labors rest upon the walls of a privately owned 13th century structure, Naworth Castle.

Susan has also developed Artistic Adventures, a learning program that moves around the world to interesting places and homes that open their doors to Susan and her apprentices. The walls, floors, ceilings, and other interiors, become the canvas upon which each apprentice works. Susan believes that through the hands-on discovery process of creating art each individual can tap into his or her artistic ability and talent. The students leave the school having gained experience and confidence by developing specialized decorative skills on location for a client project.

The first installment of Artistic Adventures was held in May 2001 at Fair Havens, a historic home in rural Georgia The results were magnificent. Visit her website below to learn more about Susan and her Fair Havens project.
